கவரி கடமா கதூஉம் படர் சாரல்
கானக நாட, மறவல், வயங்கு இழைக்கு
யானிடை நின்ற புணை.

Oh lord of land with forests
and vast mountain slopes,
where deer eat avarai beans
in the millet fields along with
fresh clusters of grain!

நயம் திகழும் என்னும் என் நெஞ்சு.

My heart thinks my friendship
with the man from the mountains
with splendid groves with huge
ponds will benefit me,
like the friendships with the wise
which are not ruining, but rooted

where fragrant, sweet mangoes,
from trees on which pepper vines

the mullai blossoms on green
vines spread fragrances, bees
buzz, and rainclouds move in
the sky.

அடும்பு இவர் எக்கர் அலவன் வழங்கும்
கொடும் கழிச் சேர்ப்பன் அருளான் எனத் தெளிந்து,
கள்ள மனத்தான் அயல் நெறிச் செல்லும் கொல்
நல் வளை சோர நடந்து.

அடும்பு இவர் எக்கர் – sand on which adumpu vines have spread, Ipomoea pes caprae, அலவன் வழங்கும் – crabs move around, கொடும் கழிச் சேர்ப்பன் – lord of the shores with curved backwaters, அருளான் எனத் தெளிந்து – knowing that he is not a gracious man (தெளிந்து – காரணப்பொருளில் வந்த வினையெச்சம்), கள்ள மனத்தான் – one with a cheating/dishonest mind (மனத்தான் – முற்றெச்சம்), அயல் நெறிச் செல்லும் கொல் – will he choose another path, will he choose some other woman – no he will not do that (கொல் – ஐயவினாப் பொருளோடு எதிர்மறைக்கண்ணது), நல் வளை சோர நடந்து – for our girl with pretty bangles to become sad

கண்ணுறு நெய்தல் கமழும் கொடுங்கழித்
தண்ணந் துறைவனோ, தன் இலன், ஆய் இழாய்,
வண்கைப் பட்டதனை ஆண்மை எனக்கருதிப்,
பண்ணமைத் தேர் மேல் வரும்.

The lord of the cool shores
with curved backwaters
bearing blue waterlily
blossoms that resemble eyes,

தெண்ணீர் இருங்கழி வேண்டும் இரை மாந்திப்,
பெண்ணை மேல் சேக்கும் வணர் வாய்ப் புணர் அன்றில்,
தண்ணந் துறைவற்கு உரையாய், மடமொழி
வண்ணம் தா என்று தொடுத்து.
What the heroine’s friend said to an ibis
Oh ibis with a curved beak,
who unites with your mate,
eating all the food you desire
from the vast brackish ponds
with clear water, and rests
on palmyra trees!
Tell the lord of the cool shores
to return the beauty of the young
woman who utters delicate words.

கானகம் நண்ணி அருள் அற்றிடக்கண்டும்
கானலுள் வாழும் குருகு.
What the heroine said to a heron
Oh heron who lives in a grove!
Do you not know the cruelty
of the lord of the shores,
……….where leaping waves attack
……….jumping sharks, tossing and
……….mixing up the school,
even after you have seen him go
to the forest without graces?

Will we be able to see
the lord of the shores,
where birds steal many
fish, brought by fishermen
with fine nets, left to dry?
My friend! Let us tell him
